Fortress Gates was aiming to retrofit a Peddinghaus metal bending machine with modern electronic controls. The bending machine is used for bending metal reinforcement for concrete. The project involved being able to set the angle of the bend digitally with an encoder, have a digital display showing the bending angle and have the machines motors bend the metal bar into any range of angles that the operator wishes. Lachlan Mackie was able to use an Atmel microcontroller to provide Fortress Gates with a viable solution to the retrofit, and guide Fortress Gates in the implementation of the hardware.
